Go out and look for a disc burning tool and you’ll be swamped with ‘production suites’ that enable you to produce everything you need to finalise your disc, whether it’s a simple audio CD or a fully-fledged authored DVD. These suites aren’t cheap and are only ideal if you want to mix your video, photos and audio tracks in to a master production to impress the rest of your family.
For a number of other people, however, they just want to get their files on to a data disc or quickly burn their favourite tracks to an audio CD. For these simple tasks, they don’t need a media production suite. Indeed, you can burn basic data discs from Windows and create an audio CD from within iTunes.
The other option is a free disc burning tool and there are few better than the rather fantastic CDBurnerXP. This isn’t a new application, it’s been around for a while. This is a good thing though as it’s enabled the developers to fine-tune the application so it does all the basics, flawlessly.
In addition to creating data and audio CDs, you can also handle just about any blank disc including a Blu-ray, as long as you have a drive that can burn these discs. You can create bootable discs, open and create ISO distributions, as well as creating an advanced gapless audio CD which is essential if you have tracks you want to blend from one to the other.

Kaspersky Internet Security 2016

Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 is the latest edition of Kaspersky's comprehensive security suite, which includes antivirus, a firewall, browsing protection, antispam, exploit prevention, parental controls, an ad blocker and more.
The latest build includes a "Private Browsing" feature which works with Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer to stop websites tracking your activities.
A "Change Control" system looks out for adware which tries to change your home or search pages, install addons or change your settings. You're alerted of any such attempts and can allow or block them with a click.
Elsewhere, Safe Mode has been improved by reducing the need for plugins, and there are assorted enhancements for the firewall, Trusted Applications mode, Safe Money, and remote management via your "My Kaspersky" account.
It's a great feature set, but Kaspersky Internet Security's real strength lies in its very solid protection. There's no need to take our word for it, as the independent testing labs regularly place Kaspersky products at or near the top of their reports - check out AV-Comparatives' latest Real-World Protection scores here.

VERDICT

Kaspersky Internet Security 2016 is easy to use, with some welcome additions, and as usual provides rock solid protection.

Unlocker 1.9.1 (64-bit)

If you have ever tried to delete a folder or rename a file only to be greeted by an error message informing you that the file is in use - even though it does not appear to be the case - Unlocker may just be the tool you have been looking for.
This free utility adds a new entry to the context menu that appears when you right click a file or folder, and this will reveal which of Windows' process are currently use the item you are trying to edit. You then have the option of terminating the process in question or using the Unlock option to try to free up the file or folder automatically.
There is no need to restart Windows, so in just a few clicks you can overcome the obstacle that was preventing you from continuing with the action you wanted to perform. It really is that simple, and it is hard to appreciate just how useful it is until you try it out. This may not be a program you use every day of the week, but it is very useful to have installed just in case.
Unlocker is a great time saver as it enables you to get on working with file and folders much more quickly than you would otherwise have been able to. As there is no need to restart Windows to unlock files, there is no need to wait for your desktop to load just because a process has grabbed control of a particular file.

VERDICT

Unlocker is not an everyday tool, but if it just gets used a couple of times you will soon understand its benefits.

Windows 8 Product Key Viewer 1.4.7d

Before you can think about reinstalling Windows 8, you’ll need to ensure that you have your product key to hand. If you have downloaded the upgrade version of the operating system, this means that you will have to search through your emails to find the key that will have been sent to you.
This is not only annoying, you may also find that it is not possible if you only have one computer, or you lose access to your email account.
Windows 8 Product Key Viewer is a tool that does exactly what you would expect it to do. Fire up the app and with a second you will be provided with the product key you need to reinstall Windows. There are no fancy extras, this is an app that serves a single purpose.
The only extra to speak of is an integrated ‘copy’ button so you can easily copy the code to the clipboard and paste it into a document ready for saving and printing out.  

VERDICT

This is not a tool you’re going to use all that often, but it’s a great utility to have on hand for when the time comes.

iPadian 0.2

IPadian is an Adobe AIR-based iPad simulator which allows you to run some iPad apps in an iPad-like interface on your own PC desktop.
Interesting? Yes, but there are major problems with attempting something like this. The program can't include the Apple App store, of course, for copyright reasons. So you're restricted to iPadian's own custom app store, instead, and while there's plenty to explore here, it's still quite limited: choose the Games category, say, and you'll find only 8 apps on offer.
There are also some major interface issues. The iPad is designed for touch, so using anything similar on a desktop, with just a mouse and keyboard, is never going to be ideal. You can still find your way around by clicking on buttons, but it all feels a little clunky, and the program doesn't allow you to use the mouse to simulate swipes (although spinning the mouse wheel will scroll occasionally).
Still, it looks great, and iPadian does provide a very complete environment: a browser, email client, social networking apps, music, videos, photos and more, with plenty of free apps to explore.
And, surprisingly, it's portable, so there's no hassles with installation (as long as your system is already equipped with Adobe AIR, anyway) - just unzip the download file, run iPadian.exe and take a closer look.
Note that iPadian Preview 2 brings support for Mac and Linux, through Adobe Air.

VERDICT

IPadian looks great, and works, too - you really can get some of the feel of an iPad on a Windows desktop. There are many issues, though: the system doesn't always work as you expect, and replacing touch with a mouse and keyboard makes for a clunky interface. Take a look, but don't expect too much.
